The geeks were dolled up and out on the town Friday night for the first annual Philly Geek Awards. Between the top hats, ballroom-worthy gowns, and the homebrew R2D2 helmet, I didn’t know if I was at the Oscars or on the set of a sci-fi movie. I guess it was a little bit of both. Even though the rain ruined a red-carpet entrance for the guests, everyone strutted their stuff up and down the halls of the live mammal Diorama Room at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Who said a moose isn’t the perfect black-tie accessory!?
Cocktail hour consisted of PSPs (a King Design fav), Summer Love and Hop Devil brews from Victory, and mini golf! A perfect combination if I do say so myself.
Then onto the awards! We walked into the auditorium to music that made me especially nostalgic for my favorite Nintendo 64 games, and from that point on, we were in geek heaven. The award categories varied from Best New Local Startup to Best Local Viral Video, Outstanding Achievement in Geek/Techie Local PR & Social Media, and of course, Best Geek Themed Noms & Beverages.
The acceptance speeches were a bit unconventional, I’m pretty sure that bacon (and vegan bacon) were thanked at one point and a fox accepted one of the awards (See photo – I’m not kidding!). And although we weren’t nominated this year, you can bet your shiny new protocol droid that KD will be King of the Geek Awards next year. Maybe a write-in category for Most Epically Awesome Design Studio that Loves Playing Golden Eye During Lunch?!
